Elisabeth A, (Betty) Tobin is the Senior Manager for Planning, Engineering and Technical Services at Snohomish County PUD #1. Her responsibilities include managerial oversight for engineering related to transmission, distribution, system planning and protection, operational technologies, standards, joint use, plat development, Everett customer engineering, GIS, Maps & Records, and Drafting. Betty has been at Snohomish County PUD #1 for 9 years and, prior to that, spent 27 years in various engineering and management positions at Seattle City Light.

In addition to her job responsibilities, Betty been instrumental in keeping young people interested in engineering. She actively participates in STEM programs providing teachers with information needed to encourage students to continue in math and science. She even has arranged meetings with high school students who are interested in engineering so they can directly ask engineers questions about what it is like to work for a utility. She is known for her willingness to sit down with beginning engineers and help them figure out the best way to accomplish what they want. And she has been a resume reviewer for IEEE Scholarship Plus applicants.

Betty attended Northwestern University where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering as well as a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Washington State and a Life Member of IEEE.

Betty will be retiring in July 2015 and moving to Virginia to be close to family. Engineering has been a wonderful career choice for me,” she said. “I have met and worked with many knowledgeable people over the years and have had many interesting projects and assignments. Of course, I count my experiences with IEEE and people I met through IEEE among my career highlights.
