Followup: YP Paintball

The April YP event was a success! Twenty-two (22) YPs all over Seattle attended this event. Thomas Wu from Panasonic Avionics gave a short talk prior to the games. He spoke about his work as a System Integration Engineer for commercial airlines. A good discussion followed suit on the changing workplace for engineers and Young Professionals today. Everyone enjoyed the open-discussion environment, and many contributed to the discussion. Student attendees also enjoyed the networking opportunity with YPs. They asked insightful questions about jobs, interviews, and industry outlook.

Followup: Seattle Young Professional Laser Tag & Laser Technology

On Friday, March 11th 2016, IEEE YP and IEEE PES Seattle YP hosted an event at Laser Quest in Federal Way. We were honored to have Mr. Tom Nugent, co-founder of Lasermotive, join us at Laser Quest for a talk about laser technologies. Lasermotive is an engineering firm developing technologies for efficiently transmitting power via lasers via a form of wireless energy transfer commonly called “laser power beaming”. Energy will be sent through air or the vacuum of space to a photovoltaic receiver, where it is converted back into electricity.

Followup: Tour of Sparks Museum of Electrical Invention 2015

The tour of the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention went very well. We had around twenty people in attendance.

We held a raffle for all attendees for an autographed copy of Spark Museum Co-CEO John Jenkin’s book “Where Discovery Sparks Imagination”. The winner was John Somerville. Congrats!

Followup: DLP Talk by Cheng-Ching Liu

The talk was excellent. Prof Cheng-Ching Liu gave an insightful overview of the problem of cyber-physical system security for a power grid. And he described the main importance and focus of recent research on the topic.

Followup: Grand Coulee Dam Tour

The VIP Hardhat Tour of the Grand Coulee Dam was fantastic. We had 18 attendees accompanied by numerous Grand Coulee Dam staff members. The tour lasted over four hours allowing us to see extensive portions of the dam. The large photo collection below is testament to the tour.

Followup: Disruptive Trends in the Traditional Utility/Energy Space: How the Utility Business Model is Evolving

Dr. Bartosz Wojszczyk kept attendees at the edge of their seats while giving an engaging and exciting presentation on disruptive technologies in the energy industry. Approximately 23 people attended from all over the industry. Based on the feedback received, this Young Professional event which was co-sponsored by the IEEE PES Seattle and IEEE PES Region 6, was rather successful. Join us for the next IEEE event!

Followup: Anacortes Water Treatment Plant Tour

Although it was a small group, we picked up two people from Oak Harbor and both were associated with that City’s water district. We spent over 2.5 hours at the plant. The tour was extensive and very informative on the treatment, operations, power and control of the plant. The plant and tour was very well run. There was another tour, American Water Association ending just as we started.

Followup: IEEE 1547 Standards Overview and Current Activity

The standards overview talk had a good turnout. We had 32 attendees, and some great networking went on before and after the meeting. Audience participation was great with good questions and expertise present. People didn’t want to leave!

Followup: Young Professionals Social and Networking: Kirkland Flatstick PUB

We had 18 people attend the Flat Stick PUB social most were IEEE PES members. It was a lively event with a mixed crowd. A fun game of mini-golf and a very intense competition of full-size Jenga was played. Overall, it was great to socialize with people from different part of the power and energy industry.
