Title: The Acceleration of Grid Modernization and Innovation through Policy and Regulation

Abstract: Ambitious clean energy and climate change policies are driving the adoption of clean energy, the electrification of all sectors of the economy, and an increased emphasis on delivering benefits through the energy system for underserved communities. Several recent state and federal policy initiatives including state utility innovation programs and the Biden Administration’s Investment in Infrastructure and Jobs Act are driving forward the market for the clean energy and grid modernization technologies that deliver on the intentions of clean energy and climate change policies. This seminar will provide an overview of several important policy initiatives and will also offer some perspective on the additional policies and regulations that will support the adoption of grid modernization technologies, such as Utilidata’s distributed AI platform, that help integrate distributed energy resources (DERs) into grid operations.

Speaker: Sophie Janeway leads policy engagement and market development in the western United States for Utilidata. In this role she works with internal and external stakeholders to influence energy policies and support market development in key states for the company’s distributed AI technology, a hardware module and software platform called Karman. Prior to joining Utilidata, Sophie successfully advocated for climate and clean energy policies in Maine and provided quantitative and qualitative policy analysis to public entities and private sector companies including the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, Sunrun and Green Mountain Power. Sophie holds a B.A. in Government from Colby College and an M.E.M in Energy Policy and Economics from the Yale School of the Environment.
