UW’s Energy Renewal

This is the third of the EE 500 series lectures of 2024 at the UW,  Thursday January 18th, 4:00pm, Mary Gates Hall, room 251.
David Woodson, Executive Director of Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations will be presenting on the UW Energy Renewal and Decarbonization efforts.
The UW EE 500 seminars are open to all.  No registration is required.  These seminars are in person only.

The central parking garage at the UW uses “PayByPhone”  If you have never used this, there are signs with QR codes in the garage to load the application and give you the garage parking “Location Number”.  You need to know the Central Parking Garage “Location Number” to pay.  Give yourself some time to load the application and create an account. Parking is $4.00/hour.

Title: UW’s Energy Renewal
Abstract:  The energy systems at UW’s Seattle campus are in need of renewal, and that renewal is taking the form of a major transformation of how the UW heats, cools, and provides electricity to its buildings.  The motivation behind UW’s energy renewal is not only an effort to eliminate direct carbon emissions and comply with state legislation to decarbonize, it is also an effort to address aging infrastructure, energy efficiency, climate adaptation, and energy resiliency.  This seminar will delve into UW’s 5-part energy strategy and how each of the elements contribute to addressing UW’s goals.  While some of the proposed solutions are unique to UW’s local environment, the principles behind the renewal have applicability to many situations beyond the UW.Bio:
Speaker: David Woodson is the Executive Director of Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations at the University of Washington. David spent most of his career at the University of British Columbia where he had been responsible for the Energy and Water Services group prior to leaving to join the UW in November 2021. David’s primary role at the UW is to decarbonize the steam plant and recapitalize energy infrastructure.  David is a UW Alumni with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and also has an MBA from the University of British Columbia.  David is also on the Executive Committee of the International District Energy Association.

The closest option is the central parking garage, entrance on 15th Ave NE and NE 41st.
